THE BRIDGE

Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life.  No one comes to the Father except through me.”  John 14:6 ESVFullSizeRender (190)

Danni likes to walk over the bridges at the park and look at the ducks, swans and the assortment of fish.  She usually quietly takes it all in without making any threatening gestures towards the local wildlife residents.

At Christmas, the lake is alight with color twinkling and reflecting on the water.  All the activity grabs Danni’s attention and she doesn’t always pay attention to her footing.  On one cold, chilly night, she toppled into the lake.  She climbed back onto the bridge faster than she fell into the water.  Shaking her wet fur in all directions, Danni was ready to head home without a backward glance.

Bridges provide a way for us to cross over an obstacle and have safe passage.  A bridge is defined as a structure spanning and providing passage over a gap or barrier, such as a river or roadway.  The bible pictures Jesus as our bridge to God.  Sin separates us from our Creator and a gap is created.  A deep crevice is formed that man cannot span to reach the other side and close the separation by his own devices.  Romans 3:23 states, “for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.”  A separation is created by our sin.

Romans 6:23 tells us, “For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.”  Trying to bridge this separation on our own only results in death.  We fall into the crevice and cannot reach God on our own.  Our verse today tells us that the only way to the father is through Jesus Christ, his son.  He is the way, the truth and the life.

Jesus laid down his own life for us on the cross.  John 3:16 says, “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.  He bridged the gap between God and man.  Now we can cross over the bridge and draw near to our Father.

Unlike Danni slipping off the park bridge, the bridge Jesus created to God is safe and secure.  Our footing is firm as we walk with the Lord and our paths straight.  Bridge the gap today and receive eternal life in Christ Jesus.
