but whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life. John 4:14 NIV
Mallory always loves to drink from the bathtub faucet. She follows me into the bathroom and I will turn the water on so she can drink. I am always discovering paw prints in my tub instead of on my heart.
In John, Chapter 4, Jesus goes through Samaria and stops to rest near a well. When a woman comes to draw water, he asks her for a drink. This request starts a deep conversation about the woman’s life. The woman is impressed with Jesus and his knowledge about her past, present and future. She is also astonished that he would talk to her since Jews did not talk to Samaritans.
Not only did Jesus take the time to talk to her, he was kind and offered her eternal life. Jesus tells her that he has water that will never stop flowing, it will well up like springs of living water and she will never thirst again. Who wouldn’t be interested in that offer? Jesus then reveals himself as the long-awaited Messiah.
In Isaiah 55:1 the invitation is to “Come, all you who are thirsty, come to the waters; and you who have no money, come, buy and eat”. The invitation still stands. Jesus is the same yesterday, today and tomorrow. He still asks us to come. He offers us salvation and eternal life through faith in Him. He longs to fill us with the life-giving water of the Holy Spirit so that we also might worship the Father in Spirit and in Truth.
Are you like Mallory and the woman at the well? Are you thirsty for living water? Search no further, Jesus has everything you need. No matter your past, a simple conversation with Jesus and he will reveal himself to you as your long-awaited Savior.
