The eye is the lamp of the body. If your eyes are healthy, your whole body will be full of light. But if your eyes are unhealthy, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light within you is darkness, how great is that darkness! Matthew 6:22-23 NIV
Maddie is a blind English Setter who is much-loved. She is sweet, friendly and very obedient. She is dependent on her owners for everything and trusts them explicitly as her world is full of darkness. They are her light.
Light is defined as “the natural agent that stimulates sight and makes things visible” or “understanding of a problem or mystery, enlightenment”. The word of God is described as a lamp unto our feet and a light unto our paths in Psalm 119:105. Light enables us to see where we are going so we do not stumble in the dark.
In today’s verse, the eye is said to be the lamp of the body and if it is clear our whole body is clear. Many people are spiritually blind. They are walking in darkness with no one to guide them or show them the way.
Our vision is clear when we focus on Jesus, the light of the world. Then as his word becomes visible to us and we understand the mysteries found in the Bible, we begin to share the light with those in darkness. Isaiah prophesied long ago of Jesus in Isaiah 9:2, “The people walking in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of deep darkness a light has dawned.
Just as Maddie follows her owners in perfect trust, we need to follow Jesus into his perfect light. He is the light of the world (John 8:12) and his light shines in the darkness and the darkness has not overcome it (John 1:5). Let there be light in your life and let it shine that it brightens the world around you.
