ENVY

Never envy the wicked!  Soon they fade away like grass and disappear.  Trust in the Lord instead. Be kind and good to others; then you will live safely here in the land and prosper, feeding in safety.  Psalm 37:1-3 TLB

Danni and I got in the car this morning.  Just as I slammed the car door shut, three dogs appeared on the other side of the street.  A beautiful gray one was sniffing around the corner in the snow.  The black and white one appeared with a piece of paper proudly hanging from his mouth.  It was obvious that this happy trio were escapees on an adventure.  I recognized the look as I’ve seen it often when Mallory, Bella and Seneca have managed to gain their freedom and take off into the sunset.

The three dogs were having the time of their life.  Freedom had been obtained and they were enjoying every minute of it.  Danni was not.  She was barking and letting them know that they were in her territory and she did not appreciate their intrusion.  As I pulled away from the curb, I prayed they would be gone when we got home.

There are many things and people in life that we grow envious of even when we know we shouldn’t.  Psalm 73:12 tells us that the wicked are always free of care, making more money.  Psalm 37:1 instructs us not to be envious of others.  We envy their freedom and sometimes we envy Christians who seem to “get” it when we struggle to understand our life in Christ.  They know all the answers and are resting in God’s grace but we keep striving, never reaching God’s peace and satisfaction.

Lots of people may have more “things” than we have but if we have the Lord, we have everything we need.  Paul tells us in Philippians 4:11 that he has learned to be content whatever the circumstances.  Our scripture today tells us that we should do good and trust in the Lord.  He is all we need and he will supply.  What we envy could soon pass away but he will be with us always.

The fun-loving trio were gone when Danni and I returned from our trip.  Danni was on the alert and looking for them but they were only a memory.  She had been worried for nothing.  They had found freedom for a moment but it was still her safe and secure spot where she enjoyed freedom every minute of every day.

Don’t extend too much time and energy worrying about things you cannot change or cannot have.  Tomorrow is another day and Jesus is with you every step of the way.
