Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day. II Corinthians 4:16 NIV
Have you seen the television commercial advertising a car with a chocolate lab? The advertisement starts out with the lab as a puppy coming home with the little boy. As the boy grows, so does the lab. As a teenager, the lab hops in the car as they go fishing. At the conclusion, the boy is mature and the chocolate lab is getting in the car a little bit slower with a lot less bounce in his step and some gray on his chin. I cry every time I see the commercial.
Our chocolate lab, Mallory has a little gray on her chin. Sometimes she limps a little due to her two ACL surgeries, but inside she’s still a puppy. She’s tugging on her pull toys, racing through the house playing with her sister and digging holes and rolling in the grass.
Some days, I can relate to that car advertisement and Mallory. There is a lot less bounce to my step and a little more gray in my hair. Proverbs 16:31 says that gray hair is a crown of splendor; it is attained in the way of righteousness. Hopefully, as we grow older, we grow wiser.
The longer we walk with Jesus, the more we can trust him. We have experienced His faithfulness through the years and know he will never leave us nor forsake us. We can tell others and mentor them on their walk with the Lord as Paul instructs in Titus 2.
Our scripture today tells us that even though our bodies are growing older, God is renewing us inwardly day by day. He is renewing our strength as we read and study His word. Our spirits soar as we walk with Jesus daily.
Let’s take our cue from Mallory, and let our inner puppy out. Let Jesus fill us with his spirit and put the bounce back in your step today.
