“For the LORD your God is a consuming fire, a jealous God.”  Deuteronomy 4:24 ESVFullSizeRender (53)

Duke enjoys the company of other dogs.  He got along great with Ralph at family gatherings so it was exciting for him to have a sleepover.  Ralph had always welcomed Duke but temporary visits appeared to be better than long-term residency.

Duke would jump up on a chair with Ralph and Ralph moved across the room to the couch.  He kept his eye on Duke’s every move.  Duke was being held by Ralph’s humans.  Duke had moved into the bed of Ralph’s master.  The situation was bleak and Ralph was jealous.

The word jealous is defined as feeling or showing envy of someone or their achievements and advantages.  It is to feel or show suspicion of someone’s unfaithfulness in a relationship.  Surely, Ralph’s humans were being unfaithful.

Jealousy is not a good thing for either party.  Proverbs 6:34 say, “For jealousy makes a man furious, and he will not spare when he takes revenge.”  Job 5:2 states, “Surely vexation kills the fool, and jealousy slays the simple.”  Proverbs 27:4 tells us, “Wrath is cruel, anger is overwhelming, but who can stand before jealousy?”  If you are filled with jealousy, you are not a happy camper.  So why does the bible say that God is a jealous God?

II Corinthians 11:2 states, “For I feel a divine jealousy for you, since I betrothed you to one husband, to present you as a pure virgin to Christ.”  Zechariah 8:2 says, “Thus says the LORD of hosts:  I am jealous for Zion with great jealousy, and I am jealous for her with great wrath.”  There is a righteous anger and a righteous jealousy that God displays.

We have been bought with a price.  Christ shed his precious blood to redeem us from our sin and be his pure bride.  God is jealous of us when we stray as we belong to him.  He is a consuming fire and he wants his children to be consumed with him.  He does not want nor does he deserve a lackadaisical Christian.

There is nothing better for a child of God than to be found faithful.  Don’t look to the right or to the left.  Keep your eyes on Jesus.  Be consumed with Him and you will want no other.
